Men's Soccer Season Ends in Wild Big South Conference Tournament Quarterfinal

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer saw its season end in a wild 4-3 loss to Longwood in Wednesday's (Nov. 6) Big South Conference tournament quarterfinal.

Longwood would start the scoring in just the eighth minute, when Ethan Stephenson capitalized on a turnover to put the Lancers up 1-0. Asheville would regain composure and press the attack for the next chunk of play, before Brendan Herb tied the match off a failed Longwood clear putting home his fifth of the season. The teams traded chances through the remainder of the half and went to the break tied 1-1 despite Asheville outshooting Longwood 6-2 in the period.

Longwood would strike quickly again in the second half, as Stephenson scored his second of the match in the 53rd minute for a 2-1 Lancer lead. The Lancers would get come cushion in the 66th minute when Aaron Asamoah scored his second of the season to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead. Asheville would rally back within one when Seth Hammond scored his fourth of the season off an assist from Herb in the 73rd minute. Stephenson would complete the hat trick with a goal in the 78th minute, before Herb would score a mesmerizing free kick for his second of the match in the 79th minute. Asheville turned up the pressure offensively in the final 10 minutes, but Longwood was able to hold strong defensively to secure the upset.

Asheville outshot Longwood 13-8 in the match including 8-5 in shots on goal. Asheville also earned eight corner kicks in the match to Longwood's five. Herb paced the offense with three shots in the match, netting his second career multi-goal game. Aysa Hamid registered two shots in the match, while Heath Flathau, Hammond, Charlie Wood, Myles Edmondson, Edvin Grolimund, Michael Wilkerson, Miller Hayden and Rinta Takagi each had one shot in the match. Charlie Farrar (7-4-4) made one save between the pipes.
