Bulldogs Blank Longwood for Huge Conference Shutout

10.26.2024 | Men's Soccer

FARMVILLE, Va. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer blanked Longwood 4-0 on Saturday (Oct. 26) for a huge Big South Conference shutout on the road. Asheville has now set a Division I era program record with its sixth shutout of the season, surpassing the 2000 season when the team recorded five clean sheets.

The teams traded offensive chances that included doorstep saves and a ring off the crossbar, but the first half looked to be ending in a scoreless deadlock. Asheville would finally break the ice in the 40th minute when a ball bounced its way to Conor Behan, who took a solid strike from outside the box. The ball sailed into the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season and 12th of his career. Asheville would hold strong defensively to end the first half, taking their 1-0 lead to the break.

Asheville would turn up the offensive pressure in the second half and it would pay off in a big way. The Bulldogs were on a transition run in the 63rd minute when Seth Hammond carved through the Longwood defense before dishing it off to Edvin Grolimund on the left side of the box. Grolimund one-timed the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 for his first of the season and his third as a Bulldog. Hammond's assist on the play was his first of the season and his second as a Bulldog. Just minutes later, the Bulldogs played a ball into the box that bounced around with no man controlling it. Finally, Benian Yao created some space to head the ball in for his second of the season and third of his career. Captain Brendan Herb would put the match on ice with his fourth of the season and 11th of his career.

Asheville outshot Longwood 16-8 in the match, including 11-1 in shots on target while also winning the corner kick battle 4-3. Herb paced the offense matching his career-high with five shots in the match, while Aysa Hamid, Grolimund and Louis Beckett each had two shots. Owen Lagerwey, Yao, Vidar Ragnarsson, Michael Wilkerson and Behan each had one shot in the match. Charlie Farrar (6-3-3) made one save between the pipes in his fifth solo shutout effort of the season, ninth as a Bulldog and 17th of his collegiate career.

The Bulldogs (6-3-3, 2-2-1 Big South Conference) will be back in action at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday (Oct. 29). Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Boiling Springs, N.C. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
