Â
The teams traded runs in the first half that included scoring chances, narrow misses and a stopped penalty as the teams went to the half scoreless. Asheville's best chance in the first half came with just five minutes to play in the half when Seth Hammond was taken down inside the goal box. Hammond tried to go left with his left foot, but Gardner-Webb's goalkeeper was up to the task to preserve the deadlock.

The ball was thrown in to Edvin Grolimund, who fed the ball into the box that found the feet of Hayden. Hayden stashed the ball home with eight seconds for his first career goal to send the match to the final horn tied.
