ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball alum Dominic Freeberger ('22) is heading back to his hometown of Baltimore as the former Bulldog has signed a professional baseball contract with the Orioles.

"We are very happy for Dom and his family," head coach Scott Friedholm said. "A chance to sign with your hometown team is a dream come true for every boy who plays baseball."

Freeberger played at Asheville from 2019 to 2022. He made 29 appearances on the mound in relief and recorded five saves and three wins. As a hitter, Freeberger finished his Bulldog career with a .303 batting average, 200 hits, 78 RBIs, 38 doubles, five triples, and seven home runs. Freeberger started in all but one game at Asheville, finishing his career with 165 starts and 166 appearances.

Freeberger earned All-BIg South First Team honors in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, Freeberger landed his spot on the first team as a utility player, recording outings in seven different positions, with lone exceptions being second base and catcher. Freeberger also had a breakout campaign at the plate, hitting .333 with six home runs and 30 RBI. Overall, he led Asheville in at-bats (201), hits (67), doubles (12), and triples (3). Freeberger was particularly productive against conference opponents, leading all players with 59 hits in Big South games. Freeberger also appeared in 11 games as a pitcher, where he posted a 2-1 record and recorded a pair of saves.

In 2022, Freeberger played eight of the nine positions, with the lone exception being catcher. He led the team in batting average (.330) and hits (62), including a .364 average with 14 RBI vs. Big South competition. As a pitcher, Freeberger saved three games and held opposing hitters to a .081 batting average.

Upon graduating from Asheville, Freeberger used his final year of eligibility to pursue a master's degree and play at UConn. While at UConn, Freeberger was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year. He started all 61 games at third base for the Huskies and made six appearances on the mound. At the plate, Freeberger hit .346 and tied for the BIG EAST lead with 85 hits. Freeberger scored 60 runs, had 13 doubles, seven home runs, and ranked second in the BIG EAST with 61 runs batted in. He slugged at a .484 clip and had a .429 on-base percentage, including swiping six bags in nine attempts. Freeberger led the team with 30 multi-hit games. Along with being named Player of the Year, he also earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors and Second Team ABCA All-Northeast Region honors.

"Dom had an outstanding career at UNC Asheville," Freidholm added. "One of the best two-way players to come through the program, but what separated Dom was how good of a person and teammate he was. This is well deserved, and the Orioles now have 40 new fans in Asheville!"
