Track & Field Has Strong Showing in Indoor Season Opener

RESULTS 

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UNC Asheville track and field team kicked off its 2024 season on Saturday at the 2024 Gamecock Opener. 

Asheville's top performer was freshman Jan Málek, who won the men's mile at 4:12.45. Málek's finish was a school record, as Málek broke the indoor record set by Adam Hessler in 2022 at 4:13.37. 

Mallory Haney recorded a podium finish, earning a third-place finish in the women's high jump. Haney recorded a distance of 1.61 meters. 

Anthony Mason broke his school record in the men's 300 as he earned a 12th-place finish with a time of 34.81. Mason set the record back in 2022 at 34.84. 

The Bulldogs had several personal bests fall on Saturday, with Brock Newsome, Jonas Roach, and Lance Surles all beating the facility record in the men's 1000. The record was set at 2:44.40, prior to Saturday's meet. Newsome finished in fourth place and earned a PR at 2:31.00. Roach and Surles finished in ninth and 10th place in their indoor season debut. Roach finished with a time of 2:43.00, and Surles finished with a time of 2:43.53. 

Sophie Lundin recorded a PR in the mile with a 19th-place finish in 5:32.89. Freshman Ella Moore also competed in the mile for the women and finished in 12th place at 5:21.56. 

In the women's 3000, Alyx Beausoleil recorded a PR at 11:49.05. Madeline Wittschen and Emma Kennett also competed in the 3000, with Wittschen earning a 14th place finish with a time of 10:55.53 and Kennett finishing in 17th at 10:59.70. 

Madison Hannah recorded a personal best in the women's weight throw, as she recorded a throw of 12.23 meters and finished in 18th. 

Alison Graf and Tom Germann recorded fourth-place finishes in their respective races, with Graf finishing in 1:39.64 in the women's 600 and Germann finishing in 1:57.48 in the men's 800. Jackson Core earned a seventh-place finish in the men's 3000 with a time of 8:57.21, and Andrew Okon finished the 3000 in ninth place with a time of 9:04.73. 

Rounding out top finishes for the Bulldogs include Zac Weas in the men's 60m hurdles, as he finished in seventh with a time of 8.30, and Alex Haines, who recorded a ninth place finish in the men's mile, with a time of 4:23.45.

Asheville will return to action next weekend, as they return to Columbia, S.C., to compete in the Carolina Challenge Jan. 19-20.
