Bulldogs Turn In Strong Performance at Carolina Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team returned to the University of South Carolina this weekend to compete in the Carolina Challenge Friday and Saturday (Jan. 19-20). 

TOP PERFORMERS

Jalen Anderson was Asheville's top performer, winning the men's 200m with a time of 21.66, an indoor school record. 

Mallory Haney and Raina Jackson were the Bulldogs' following top performers, as both finished in second place in their respective events. Haney placed second in the women's high jump with a height of 1.57 meters. Haney was joined by the freshmen duo of Francesca Cergol (1.46 meters, sixth) and Amelia Rogers (1.41 meters, 11th). In the women's shot put, Jackson placed second with a distance of 13.39 meters. 

FRIDAY'S RESULTS

On the track on Friday, there was a trio of third-place finishes and personal bests, as well as two season bests recorded. In the women's 3000m, freshman Ella Moore and sophomore Sophie Lundin ran shoulder-to-shoulder to finish in third and fourth place at 10:31.94 and 10:34.53, respectively. 

A podium finish was also clinched by sophomore Emma Kennett, who recorded a time of 5:23.72 in the women's mile to put her in third place. The final podium spot for the Bulldogs was claimed by senior Tom Germann, who finished in a time of 1:58.24 in the men's 800m to secure third place. 

In the men's 60m hurdles, senior Zac Weas ran a season's best of 8.20 to qualify for the finals, where he finished in fifth place with a time of 8.22. 

The UNC Asheville's track team rounded off the day with the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays, with both teams recording season bests. The women's team, which consisted of Elyse Myles, Brianna Moore, Zoe Bos, and Emily Leo, earned a second-place finish with a time of 4:06.63. The men's team, consisting of  Braelin June, Isaac Wright, Zac Weas, and Jaheem O'Hara, earned a third-place finish in a time of 3:29.22. 

Inside the track, the field events were led by freshman Jaelyn Arnold, who secured personal bests in both the weight throw (13.00 meters, eighth) and the shot put (11.30 meters, fourth). 

There were also personal bests from sophomore Madison Hannah in the weight throw (12.49 meters) and shot put (10.11 meters) and freshman Renae Younce, who unlocked a new distance of 11.30 meters in the shot put. 

In the men's long jump, freshman Dylan Metcalf recorded a personal best of 5.18 meters.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

Senior Jackson Core secured a personal best of 4:24.36 on the men's side in the mile invite (12th place). Core was closely followed by fellow senior Andrew Okon (14th place, 4:27.28) and fifth-year senior Brock Newsome (17th place, 4:31.76). Senior Tom Germann also ran a personal best time of 4:37.65 to place 19th in the race. 

Newsome also ran the men's 800m invite, placing 12th (1:58.45).

In the men's 3000m, the Bulldogs' strongest performer was freshman Jan Malék, who finished in sixth place at 8:23.58. Malek was joined by fifth-year senior Alex Haines (11th, 8:42.58) and senior Daniel Hopkins (12th, 8:59.21). 

Fifth-year Brianna Moore earned a season's best in the women's long jump invite with a distance of 5.49 meters to place fifth in the event. 

On the track, junior Madeleine Wittschen took sixth place in the women's 5000m invite to finish in 18:21.45. In the 3000m invite, freshman Isabel Richardson ran a time of 10:17.58 to place ninth. The men's 4x400 team consisting of DaMarr Harvey, Jalen Anderson, Anthony Mason, and Christopher Owens finished in seventh with a season's best 3:19.62.
