GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) at Furman on Wednesday night in non-conference action. Asheville moves to 3-2 on the season with Wednesday's setback.
Stat Standouts – Baylor Herlehy tallied five kills on nine attacks to go with four blocks. Kylie Cackovic led Asheville in kills on Wednesday with seven and Michelle Thao tallied a team-high eight digs against the Paladins.
First Set – Asheville and Furman traded the first 13 points in Wednesday's match. However, the Paladins reeled off seven straight points to gain some separation from the Bulldogs, 14-6. Asheville closed the gap to six points after a kill from Albertine van der Goot made the score, 16-10. Furman, however, kept the pressure on and went on to take the first set, 25-17.
Second Set – The Paladins kept things rolling in the second set. Furman never trailed in the second and hit a match-high .385 with 13 kills on its way to a 25-15 win in the frame. A kill from Thao trimmed the Paladin lead to three points (12-9) but a 7-0 run from Furman put the set out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Third Set – Despite being down two sets, the Bulldogs kept battling in the third. A block put up by Herlehy and Cackovic evened the score at 21 late in the stanza. Back-to-back Paladin points put the pressure back on Asheville. Herlehy picked up two more kills to bring the Bulldogs within a point twice, but Furman ended up finishing out Wednesday's match with a 25-23 set victory.
Next Up – Asheville will see the Paladins on Friday when the latter visits the Justice Center in another non-conference matchup. First serve for that match is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
