ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Furman (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) Friday evening at the Justice Center. With Friday's setback, the Bulldogs moved to 3-3 on the 2023 campaign.
Stat Standouts – Kylie Cackovic led the way for Asheville on Friday night with a team-high 13 kills. The 13 kills for Cackovic set a new career-high for the sophomore outside hitter. Furthermore, Ona Elkins nearly notched a double-double with eight assists and a team-leading 10 digs in the contest.
Set 1 – Furman jumped on Asheville early in Friday's match scoring three of the first four points of the evening. Asheville, however, clawed back to tie the score at 9-9 thanks to a kill from Cackovic. The Paladin offense found momentum though and hit a match-high .324 in the frame to pull back in front of Asheville and eventually take the first set, 25-17.
Set 2 – The second set was a back-and-forth one with seven tied scores and three lead changes. Ryann Allison, Matilde Teixeira, and Cackovic all had four kills to help the Bulldogs keep pace with the Paladins. However, Furman closed out the stanza on a 5-2 run to go up 2-0 on Asheville, 25-20.
Set 3 – In what proved to be the final set of the evening, Asheville and Furman traded the first 22 points. The Paladins were able to put together a 4-0 run to give them a four-point advantage, 15-11. Back-to-back kills from Cackovic made it 15-13 Furman. Furman then scored seven of the next nine points to open a seven-point lead, 22-15. Asheville outscored the Paladins down the stretch four to three but that still was enough to give Furman the set and the match, 25-19.
Next Up – Asheville will return to action on Tuesday when it visits mountain rival Western Carolina for another non-conference clash. First serve between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is slated for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
