Volleyball Notches a Pair of Victories on Saturday

08.26.2023 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team notched a pair of victories at the Justice Center on Saturday. First, Asheville outlasted North Carolina Central in five sets before sweeping Maryland Eastern Shore later in the day in three frames. With Saturday's victories, the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the young season. The 3-1 start by Asheville marks the program's best four-match start to a season since 2013, when it began 4-0.

North Carolina Central Recap – In the first match on Saturday, there was not a ton of separation between the Eagles and Bulldogs. None of the five sets were decided by more than four points, and two of the five were decided by two points. Asheville won the first set 25-23, but NCCU immediately answered with a 25-22 triumph in the second. The Bulldogs bounced back to take the third set 25-22 but fell to the Eagles, 25-23, in the fourth, setting up a winner-take-all fifth set.

The Bulldogs led by as many as four in the fifth, but a 3-0 North Carolina Central run closed the gap to a point at 11-10. A key timeout by Asheville seemed to stop the Eagles' momentum as the Bulldogs scored four of the following seven points to finish off the 15-13 win.

Albertine van der Goot did some of everything in the day's first match. The freshman totaled 12 kills, dished out 14 assists, and added five digs and six block assists. Matilde Teixeira continued her stellar first weekend as a Bulldog with a 13-kill, 11-dig performance. Michelle Thao also reached double digits in digs with 10, while the tandem of Kylie Cackovic and Baylor Herlehy added nine kills to fuel the Bulldog attack.

Maryland Eastern Shore Recap – Asheville put together its most efficient offensive performance of the young season in its final match of the weekend. Despite the Hawks having 10 more attack attempts, the Bulldogs attacked at a season-best mark of .289 to fuel a three-set win (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) after falling to the same team last night in five sets.

Individually, Teixeira notched her fourth straight double-digit kill performance with 12 and finished the contest with a .478 hitting percentage. Van der Goot attacked at a .333 clip with seven kills, with two solo blocks and two block assists in the victory. Cackovic also had seven kills and finished the match with a .417 attack percentage.

Next Up
 – The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Furman in a non-conference matchup. The first serve between the Bulldogs and Paladins is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
