ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's tennis alum Lize-Alet Morkel '22 will be representing her home nation of South Africa in the upcoming World University Games in Chengdu, China from July 28-Aug. 8.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be representing South Africa at the World University Games held in Chengdu, China," said Morkel. "It's an incredible opportunity that I am very grateful for. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my coach at UNC Asheville, Lise Gregory, for her invaluable mentorship and exceptional coaching skills. I also want to thank my teammates throughout my four years at UNC A, as well as everyone who supported me along the way. I couldn't have achieved this without their unwavering support and belief in me. They have shaped me into the player I am today. I will proudly carry the Bulldog spirit with me and make South Africa proud!"
Morkel posted a singles record of 41-15 for her career in Asheville, along with a doubles record of 34-18. She earned four Big South Conference Player of the Week honors along with two Freshman of the week honors in her career and was also a five-time All-Conference selection. She was the first player in program history to be named Freshman of the Year. Morkel also excelled in the classroom, being named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team twice and also being named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior.
"It's such an honor to represent your country and Lize-Alet is truly deserving of that honor," said Asheville head coach Lise Gregory. "I'm happy for her and as always I'm very proud of her."
