Asheville Takes Big South Conference Runner-Up in Heartbreaking Title Match

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Tennis fell in heartbreaking fashion in the Big South Conference Championship on Sunday (Apr. 23), coming up just short by a score of 4-3 to three-time defending league champion Charleston Southern.  

The Bulldogs were able to get one win in doubles play, before Charleston Southern rallied for two victories to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. The teams went back and forth in singles play, before Charleston Southern rallied for back-to-back victories in the final two singles matches of the day to clinch the win.
Valeria Centeno and Elizabeth Tindera got things started for Asheville with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Zoe Cauthen and Tiffany Pyritz. After Charleston Southern captured the doubles point, Centeno tied the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Kassandra Di Staulo. After Charleston Southern went ahead 2-1 with a win at No. 3 singles, Asheville rallied for a 3-2 lead in the contest with back-to-back victories within minutes of each other. Rosie Dickson defeated Khyanna Singh 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4, before Avery Sager put the Bulldogs ahead with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Cauthen at No. 5 singles. Charleston Southern would rally for third set wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 singles, which ended in a tiebreaker.
