Bulldogs get back into the win column with a 10-6 victory over ETSU

03.21.2023 | Baseball

HIGHLIGHTS

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
The UNC Asheville baseball team defeated East Tennessee State on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 10-6 at Greenwood Field. With the win, which was Asheville's first over ETSU since 2017, boosts the Bulldogs' record to 13-7 on the season.

The 10-run outburst for Asheville on Tuesday marked the ninth time this season that it has scored 10 or runs in a game this season. Corbin Lanowitz and Kohl Abrams both had three-hit days at the plate, while Michael Groves and Robbie Burnett added two hits a piece to round out the offensive leaders for the Bulldogs.

Asheville used eight pitchers in Tuesday's win over the Buccaneers. Chris Sabo posted the longest outing of any Bulldog pitcher with two shutout innings and he allowed one hit and struck out two. For his efforts, Sabo picked up his second win of the season. Bryce Fisher, Cole Bates, and Groves also logged scoreless innings on Tuesday.

ETSU struck first on Tuesday with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. However, the Bulldogs bounced back in the bottom half of the frame. After a throwing error started the rally, Asheville scored two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout before Groves launched a two-run home run to right field to put the Bulldogs up, 4-1.
Asheville added to its lead in the third. Lanowitz got things started with a single and Cameron Johnson earned a walk on four pitches to put a pair of runners on in front of Groves. Groves came through again with a big two-run double to make the score 6-1 Bulldogs.

After ETSU got a pair of runs back in the fifth, the Bulldogs gained some more separation in the sixth with four runs on four hits to make the score 10-3 Asheville.

The Buccaneers got a few runs back in the seventh and eighth, but the Bulldogs' seven run cushion stood up as Asheville finished off the 10-6 win. The Bulldogs improve to 10-1 at home this season.

The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend when they host Longwood in a three-game Big South series at Greenwood Field. The series opener between the Bulldogs and Lancers is set for 5 p.m. on Friday on ESPN+.
