Women's Basketball Drops Big South Conference Contest at Gardner-Webb on Saturday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped its Big South Conference contest at Gardner-Webb on Saturday (Feb. 18) by a score of 82-58.
UNC Asheville built multiple five-point leads in the first quarter, before increasing the lead to nine with 1:21 to play in the period off a Jamaya Blanks jumper. Gardner-Webb would finish the quarter on a run, but Asheville led 15-14 after 10 minutes.
The teams traded the lead early in the second quarter, before a brief Asheville run put the Bulldogs back up by five off a three-pointer from Dakota McCaughan. The Bulldog lead would fluctuate over the next few minutes, going as high as six and to as few as one as UNC Asheville took a 29-28 lead to the break.
Gardner-Webb would find its groove offensively in the second half, using a third-quarter surge to clinch the win on its home floor.
Asheville out-scored Gardner-Webb off the bench 20-5 in the game. Mallory Bruce led the way for Asheville with 18 points, while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter added 10 in the game. McCaughan chipped in seven, while Abigail Wilson and Blanks each had six. Jamia Blake contributed four points, while Jordaynia Ivie and Millie Brown each had three and Faith Adams also had one. Bruce also led the way on the glass with eight rebounds, while Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each pulled down six rebounds. Blanks added four in the game, while Adams had three and Blake and Ivie each had two. Bruce and Adams each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Ivie and Jada Brigman each had two and Brooks-Sumpter also had one. Brigman, Brooks-Sumpter and McCaughan each had one steal in the game for Asheville.
