Bulldogs Pick up Key Road Win at Charleston Southern Wednesday Night

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball picked up a key Big South Conference road win at Charleston Southern Wednesday night (Feb. 22), beating Charleston Southern by a score of 65-55.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, the Bulldogs rattled off a run to go ahead 7-3 just past the halfway point of the period. After Charleston Southern got back within two, Asheville outscored the Buccaneers 7-2 in the last two minutes to take a 14-7 lead to the second.

Asheville extended the lead to 10 in the early goings of the second, before extending the lead further into double digits halfway through the quarter. The Bulldogs would grow their lead to 20 before taking a 38-19 lead to the break.

The Bulldogs held Charleston Southern to just seven points in the third quarter, building their lead even further headed to the fourth. Charleston Southern would explode for 29 points in the fourth quarter holding Asheville to nine, but the Bulldogs would take the win on the road.

Asheville outscored Charleston Southern 15-6 on fast breaks and 24-17 off the bench, while each team scored 24 points in the paint in the game. Asheville also scored 12 points off turnovers and eight on second chances. Jordaynia Ivie led the way with a game-high 19 points, just one off her career-high. Dakota McCaughan added 13 points, while Abigail Wilson also had 10. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter scored seven points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks contributed five and Nycerra Minnis had four. Mallory Bruce contributed three points, while Faith Adams and Jamia Blake each had two points. The Bulldogs out-rebounded Charleston Southern 39-36 in the game, led by a game-high 10 boards from Brooks-Sumpter. Wilson also pulled down six rebounds, while Blanks and Minnis each had five rebounds. Adams grabbed four rebounds in the game, while Ivie had two and McCaughan, Bruce and Blake each had one. Brooks-Sumpter, Ivie, McCaughan and Bruce each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Blanks, Adams and Millie Brown each had one helper in the game. Adams registered two steals in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Ivie, McCaughan, Blanks, Wilson and Minnis each had one steal in the game. Brooks-Sumpter also had one block in the game.

The Bulldogs return home to Kimmel Arena on Saturday (Feb. 25) to face Longwood in the regular season finale for Equity and Inclusion Day. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena.
