Women's Basketball Falls to Longwood in Regular Season Finale

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to Longwood inside Kimmel Arena in the regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 25) by a score of 59-50.
The teams played a slow-moving first quarter heading to the second tied at 13, before Longwood held a 9-7 advantage in the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead to the break.
Asheville out-scored Longwood 18-16 in the third quarter to send the game to the third quarter tied at 38. Longwood built a lead up to eight through the first four minutes, before scores from Jamia Blake and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter on back-to-back possessions cut the deficit to just three with under five minutes to play in the period. The deficit would fluctuate over the final few minutes of the third, before the Bulldogs scored five unanswered points to close out the quarter and send the game for the fourth tied.
After Brooks-Sumpter tied the game with a layup just under two minutes into the frame, the Lancers went on a run to pull away in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs would battle until the final horn but were unable to complete the comeback.
Asheville outscored Longwood 13-6 off the bench, while also scoring 19 points off turnovers, 28 points in the paint, eight on second chances and eight on fast breaks. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with a career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while Blake added seven points and Abigail Wilson and Jamaya Blanks each had six. Jordaynia Ivie and Mallory Bruce each had two points in the game, while Faith Adams also had one. Each team pulled down 40 rebounds in the contest, with Asheville being led by Brooks-Sumpter's 10 boards. Nycerra Minnis pulled down six rebounds, while Blake had five and Wilson grabbed four. Ivie and Mallory each had three rebounds in the game, while Blanks had two and Adams also had one. Ivie paced the Bulldogs with three assists in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter had two and Blanks and Dakota McCaughan each had one. Blanks and Bruce each had two steals in the game, while Ivie, Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each had one steal in the game.
The Bulldogs are in action next on Wednesday (Mar. 1) in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament, facing off against an opponent to be determined.
