Bulldogs Grind Out 52-49 Win over Radford on Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball was able to grind out a 52-49 Big South Conference win over Radford on Wednesday (Feb. 15) inside Kimmel Arena.

The teams played to an early 7-7 deadlock through three and a half minutes, before going bucket for bucket through the first quarter with Radford leading 17-15 after 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs found their groove defensively in the second quarter, holding Radford to just eight points in the frame. The Highlanders built an early six-point lead in the frame, before the Bulldogs rallied to tie the game at 21 three and a half minutes in. The teams traded scores over the next few minutes, before the Bulldogs scored six unanswered over the final 3:53 of the half to take a 30-25 lead to the break.

Radford tied the game at 30 early in the third quarter, before the Bulldogs quickly built an eight-point lead on a run that included scores from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter, Jordaynia Ivie and Abigail Wilson. Asheville was able to keep Radford at a few possessions' distance for the remainder of the quarter, ultimately taking a 43-36 lead to the fourth.

The Bulldogs maintained a lead early in the period, before Radford started to chip away slowly. The lead would fluctuate with the Bulldogs still ahead, getting down to as few as two halfway through the period. As the game got into its final two minutes, Radford was able to get within one, before the Bulldogs were able to knock down some key free throws and hold strong defensively to come away with the win.

Asheville scored 11 points off turnovers in the game, 18 in the paint, seven off second chances, four off fast breaks and 14 off the bench. Brooks-Sumpter led the way with a game-high 18 points, while Ivie and Dakota McCaughan each had seven and Faith Adams had six. Wilson and Jamia Blake each had four, while Mallory Bruce contributed three, Jamaya Blanks two and Millie Brown one. Bruce led the way with eight rebounds in the game, while Wilson had five and Brooks-Sumpter and Blanks each pulled down four. Ivie, McCaughan and Adams each grabbed two rebounds in the game, while Blake also had one. Bruce and Adams each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while McCaughan had two and Brooks-Sumpter, Blanks, Ivie and Brown each had one. Brooks-Sumpter recorded a team-high two steals in the game, while Adams, McCaughan, Ivie, Brown and Blake also each had one.

The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Saturday (Feb. 18) at Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. from Boiling Springs, N.C., with video (ESPN3) and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
