Women's Basketball Battles, but Drops Season Opener at Furman Tuesday Night

11.07.2023 | Women's Basketball

GREENVILLE, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball battled in its season opener Tuesday night (Nov. 7), but dropped the contest to Furman at Timmons Arena by a score of 71-61.

Asheville opened the first quarter on a 7-2 run through about three minutes, before Furman countered to close the gap to two. Asheville would extend its lead back to six with an old-fashioned three-point play from LaImani Simmons, before the teams battled to the end of the frame with Asheville leading 19-14.

Asheville opened the second quarter on a four-plus minute scoring drought, while Furman would go on an 12-0 run over those same minutes. Asheville responded strong in the frame,
cutting the deficit to just three as the teams headed to the break. Faith Adams beat the buzzer with a running floater in the lane to cut the Furman lead to 34-31 at the half.

The teams battled through the first few minutes of the third quarter, before Asheville's defense was able to hold Furman to limited scoring in the second half of the frame. Asheville struggled to find the bottom in the latter stages of the third, but their defense kept them in the game as Furman's lead was only seven headed to the fourth.

Asheville saw Furman's lead grow to double digits early in the fourth, before back-to-back three-pointers from Millie Brown got Asheville back within five with five minutes to play. Furman pushed the pace in the later stages of the contest, securing the victory from the free throw line.

Asheville shot 34.4 percent (22-64), 31.6 percent from three-point range (6-19) and 55.0 percent (11-20) from the foul line in the game. Asheville out-scored Furman 21-10 off of turnovers, and 27-25 off the bench. LaImani Simmons posted a team-high 14 points in the game, while Jaila Lee had 12 points in her first game as a Bulldog. Mallory Bruce and Millie Brown each tallied nine points in the game, with Brown notching new career highs in points and three-pointers (three). Jamaya Blanks had seven points, while Faith Adams and Nycerra Minnis each had four points along with two points from Abigail Wilson. Simmons, Lee and Bruce each pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the win, while Blanks, Minnis and Wilson each had three boards in the game. Adams and Dakota McCaughan each had one rebound in the game. Lee led all Bulldogs with two assists in the game, while Simmons, Bruce, Minnis, Wilson Adams and McCaughan each had one assist. Lee also led the way with three steals, while Adams had two and Simmons, Minnis, McCaughan, Brown and Briauna Thompson also had one steal each. Adams, Minnis and Thompson each registered one block in the game.

The Bulldogs (0-1) return to action on Sunday (Nov. 12), hosting Tennessee State in the home opener. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
