Women's Basketball Rally Falls Short at Longwood Wednesday Night

FARMVILLE, Va. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team's fourth quarter rally fell short at Longwood in Big South Conference action Wednesday night (Jan. 11), with the Lancers winning 75-65.

The Bulldogs jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 8-2 early in the first quarter, before Longwood cut into the lead at 10-8 with five and a half minutes to play in the period. Asheville would again stretch the lead to eight with three and a half minutes to play in the quarter, eventually taking an eight-point lead to the second at 23-15.

Longwood responded with a strong second quarter, out-scoring Asheville 22-12 while taking a 37-35 lead to the break.

Asheville rebounded in the third quarter, out-scoring Longwood 15-12 to take a 50-49 lead to the fourth. Longwood increased its lead to four in the early goings of the period, before a Nycerra Minnis second-chance bucket tied the game at 43 at the halfway point. The teams would trade scores and the lead through the remainder of the period as they headed to the fourth.

Longwood responded in the fourth quarter to out-score Asheville 26-15 to defend their home floor for the win.

McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led the way with 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Jordaynia Ivie also contributed 16 points and Abigail Wilson added 11. Mallory Bruce scored seven points in the game, while Faith Adams had five, Minnis had four and Dakota McCaughan also had three. Asheville out-rebounded Longwood 40-31 in the game behind Brooks-Sumpter's career-high mark, while Ivie and Wilson each pulled down five rebounds in the game. Minnis grabbed four rebounds in the game, while Bruce and Adams each had three and Jamaya Blanks also had two. Brooks-Sumpter and Ivie each dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while Bruce also helped on one Asheville bucket. Brooks-Sumpter matched her career-high with a team-best four steals in the game, while Ivie and Bruce each had one. Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each posted one block in the game for Asheville.

The Bulldogs return to the floor in Kimmel Arena on Saturday (Jan. 14) to face Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action for the "We Back Pat" game. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena.
