Chattanooga outlasts Asheville in a five-set battle on Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9) to Chattanooga Wednesday evening at the Justice Center. With Wednesday's result, Asheville moves to 3-6 on the 2022 campaign.
Stat Standouts – The Bulldogs had multiple players rack up impressive numbers on Wednesday. The trio of Kat Cruser (12 kills, 13 digs), Pelin Aksoy (11 kills, 10 digs), and Lindsay Springer (27 assists, 13 digs) all recorded double-doubles. Avery Loeback matched a season-high with eight kills to go with four block assists, while Giulia Rodrigues continued to rack up digs as she finished with 23 on the night.
Set 1 – Wednesday's match began competitively with the score being knotted at 10-10 after a Chattanooga attack error. However, the Mocs then went on a 5-0 run to gain the first sizable lead of the match. Asheville, meanwhile, struggled to get its offense clicking in the first after the Mocs built their lead. Chattanooga went on to take the first frame, 25-15.
Set 2 – Asheville's offense started to find its rhythm in the second. Collectively, the Bulldogs attacked at a .343 clip in the second stanza. Aksoy was especially impressive, totaling five kills on 10 tries. Despite Aksoy and the rest of the Bulldogs' best efforts, the score was tied 20-20 late in the set. Asheville would persevere through as it got a pair of kills from Cruser and Aksoy to even the match at a set a piece, 25-21.
Set 3 – Both offenses cooled off a bit in the third. However, the score was tight towards the end of the frame just like in the second. A Moc attack error cut Chattanooga's lead down to one point, 21-20. Unlike the second frame, Chattanooga picked up the key points when it needed them and scored four of the next five points to regain the lead, 25-22.
Set 4 – Asheville began the fourth set very well scoring the first four points and six of the first seven points overall. However, Chattanooga battled back to tie the score 11-11. Back-to-back aces from Ona Elkins seemed to swing the momentum back to the Bulldogs as they never gave the lead back, winning the fourth frame, 25-20.
Set 5 – Early in the fifth set it looked like the Bulldogs were going to take the match as they got off to a 4-0 lead. Credit the Mocs though as they not only stopped Asheville's run but put together a lengthy run of its own. This sizable Chattanooga run proved to be the deciding factor in the contest as the Mocs won the fifth, 15-9.
Next Up – The same two teams will meet again a week from tonight in Chattanooga. The start time for that tilt is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
