Bulldogs battle but fall in four sets at Chattanooga

09.14.2022 | Women's Volleyball

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled but ended up falling on the road at Chattanooga in four sets (25-22, 25-13, 19-25, 25-14) Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Stat Standouts – A couple of Bulldogs ended the night scoring in double figures. Kat Cruser led the charge in terms of kills with 12, while Avery Loeback set a new career-high with 10 kills of her own. Setting up Cruser, Loeback, and the rest of the Bulldog attack most of the night was freshman Lindsay Springer. Springer logged her second straight double-double with 29 assists and 15 digs. Defensively, Giulia Rodrigues was right behind Springer with 14 digs, while Lexy Cole tallied three block assists to go with a .435 hitting percentage and eight kills in the contest.

First Set – Much like the match last week between these same two programs, the first set was very competitive. The score was tied at 11 different points in the first set alone. A 3-0 run by Asheville resulted in one of those ties, 21-21. Chattanooga, however, picked four of the next five points to finish off the frame, 25-22.

Second Set – The second set on Wednesday was all Mocs. Chattanooga did it both offensively and defensively in the second as it hit .429 with 17 kills, while also totaling four blocks. With both sides of their game working so well, the Mocs won the second stanza, 25-13.

Third Set – Facing a 3-0 sweep, the Bulldogs put together their best effort of the match in the third. Asheville collected 18 kills and attacked at a .394 clip to stay alive in the match winning the frame, 25-19. Cruser led the way with six kills for the Bulldogs in the frame.

Fourth Set – Much like it did in the second set, Chattanooga's offense was hitting on all cylinders in what proved to be the final set of the match. Over half of Chattanooga's attacks in the fourth ended in a kill (18 kills – 31 attacks). Asheville's offense, which cooled off some from the third, could not keep up with the Mocs' hot-hitting offense as the latter finished off the four-set victory, 25-14.

Note from Coach – "It was a good match," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We had some good moments but still searching for consistency overall. Obviously not the result we wanted but the team is still evolving and working hard."

Next Up – Asheville, now 3-7 on the season, will return to action next Thursday and Friday when it opens Big South play by hosting Winthrop and Radford at the Justice Center. Both matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. first serves on ESPN+.
