ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will return home to the Justice Center on Wednesday to host Chattanooga. First serve between the Bulldogs and Mocs is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville posted a 1-2 record at last weekend's 'Tussle in the Triad' Tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro. The Bulldogs swept South Carolina State but suffered 3-0 defeats to Georgia Southern and UNC Greensboro. With last weekend's results, Asheville is now 3-5 on the 2022 season.
Defense stepping up – Two weeks into the season, Asheville ranks near the top of the conference in opponent's hitting percentage. The Bulldogs are holding opposing teams to attack at a .193 clip, which ranks second in the league behind only Radford's .182 mark.
Kat near the top of the leaderboards – Kat Cruser, who has earned All-Tournament team honors in both of Asheville's tournaments this season, ranks 10th in the conference averaging 2.68 kills per set and fifth in aces with 10. Cruser is one of just four players in the Big South to rank in top 10 in both categories joining Dylan Mayberry of High Point, Peyton Thompson from Charleston Southern, and Chloe Cook from Campbell.
Rodrigues racking up the digs – Junior Giulia Rodrigues has been important part of Asheville's defense so far in 2022. Rodrigues ranks 14th nationally in digs with 120 so far this season. In the Big South ranks, Rodrigues is second behind only Charleston Southern's Angelika Rusin and her 137 digs.
Asheville connection – Bulldog fans will see a familiar face on the sidelines for the Mocs on Wednesday as they are led by former Asheville Head Coach Julie Torbett. Torbett led the Bulldogs from 1994-2010 and totaled over 300 victories during her time with the Bulldogs. She also led the program to a pair of Big South regular season titles.
About Chattanooga – Chattanooga enters Wednesday's match sporting a 1-5 record. Individually, the Mocs are led by Natalie Tyson who has totaled 64 kills in the six matchups so far.
Series Rewind vs. Mocs – Asheville and Chattanooga have met a total of five times over the years with the first occurring in 2005. The Mocs have won three of the five meetings. Wednesday's match, however, will be the first ever match between these two programs in Asheville.
