09.04.2022 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will face its toughest test of the young season on Tuesday when it travels to take on No. 1 Clemson. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Tigers is set for 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Last Time Out – Asheville lost a tough one to East Tennessee State last Friday at Greenwood Field by a score of 3-2. With the loss, the Bulldogs' record dips to 1-2 on the season.
Score Two for Herb – A highlight for the Bulldogs on Friday was that Brendan Herb netted his first two goals as a Bulldog in the contest. Herb scored his first goal on a penalty shot, while his second came on a free kick attempt.
Boost to the Offense – After three matches, a bright spot for Asheville has been its ability to score. The Bulldogs netted 14 goals in 16 matches last fall. Comparatively, Asheville has scored eight goals already this season.
Ranked Team Test for Asheville – Tuesday will mark the first time that the Bulldogs have faced off against a top-25 program since 2018 when they took on No. 9 UNC Wilmington. Asheville has earned a pair of victories against ranked teams in the past decade. Both of these wins were against ranked-Coastal Carolina teams in 2013 (1-0) and 2015 (3-2) when the Chanticleers were ranked sixth and fourth in the nation at the time. Furthermore, the 2013 contest was Head Coach Mick Giordano's senior night, while Assistant Coach Joe LaCasto tallied an assist in the 2015 contest.
About Clemson – The Tigers enter Tuesday's matchup with the Bulldogs atop the national polls. The defending 2021 National Champions are off to a 3-0 record so far in 2022 after wins over Indiana (3-2), USC Upstate (2-0), and South Carolina (1-0).
Series Rewind vs. the Tigers – Asheville and Clemson have met a total of six times over the years. Tuesday will be the first matchup since 2007. In that last meeting, the Bulldogs upended the Tigers 2-1 in double overtime at Greenwood Field. The Tigers, however, have won the other five matches, which were all played at Clemson.
