CLEMSON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team battled hard against No. 1 Clemson on Tuesday night in non-conference action. Despite Asheville's best efforts, the top-ranked Tigers came away with a 4-0 victory.
Tuesday's match started with the top-ranked Tigers fully in control. The Bulldog defense backed by goalkeeper A.J. Bengds, withstood an early flurry of Clemson shot attempts and corner kicks to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard for the first 10 minutes of the contest.
After being peppered with offensive chances, Asheville broke the Tigers' rhythm offensively and Jake Kemhadjian had a shot attempt for the Bulldogs' first real scoring chance of the matchup.
Clemson promptly went back on the attack and netted goals in the 13th, 19th, and 21st minutes to open a 3-0 lead on the Bulldogs after one half of play.
The Tigers kept pressuring Asheville in the second half. Junior Ian McGill came in at net for Asheville and rattled multiple fantastic saves. He finished with eight saves in 45 minutes of action.
Asheville, now 1-3 on the season, will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Belmont at Greenwood Field. Saturday's match, which will be the program's 'Be the Match' game, will begin at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
