CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team fell on the road at Charleston Southern on Wednesday by the final score of 2-0. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 3-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Big South play.
Charleston Southern tested the Bulldog defense early and often in the first half. Overall, the Buccaneers totaled 10 shot attempts in the first 45 minutes compared to four for Asheville. CSU would eventually break through in the 31st minute as Erin Rush netted her third goal of the season to give her team the first lead of the contest. The Buccaneer goal ended an impressive shutout streak for Asheville as that was the Bulldogs' first goal allowed since September 8 at Davidson (Over 370 minutes played).
Trailing by a goal in the second half, the Bulldogs had multiple scoring chances to tie it at 1-1. Both Solveig Schlitter and Barrett Eidson had shot attempts bounce off the crossbar in the final 45 minutes.
Even with these near misses for Asheville, Charleston Southern was the next team to score as in the 58th minute Jenea Knight cut through the Bulldog defense and scored her fifth of the season to make it 2-0 Charleston Southern. The two-goal outburst by CSU proved too large for Asheville to overcome as it dropped its first conference match of the season.
Asheville will be back in action on Saturday when it visits High Point in another Big South matchup. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Panthers is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
