HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team fell on the road to High Point by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday night in Big South action.
High Point had a stellar chance about three minutes in on a cross, but its first shot attempt went wide. That chance turned into a Panther corner kick and then an Asheville goal kick. However, a turnover by the Bulldogs in their own end led to another early scoring chance for the Panthers and they cashed this one in as Skylar Prillaman buried a shot in the top-right corner of the goal to give High Point the early 1-0 advantage.
Following the early High Point goal, it seemed like Asheville did a better job controlling the ball and had some shot attempts of its own. Freshman Azalea Mihailovich had the Bulldogs' top scoring chance of the half but a nice save from High Point's keeper kept Asheville off the scoreboard.
Barrett Eidson and Taylor Gardner also had shot attempts in the first half but neither found the back of the net to tie the score.
Despite renewed offensive pressure from Asheville, the Panthers still mustered some scoring threats of their own. A stellar give-and-go and a cross close to Asheville's goal led to High Point's Fain Buete netting her first career goal and gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
High Point would add some insurance when the two teams returned for the second half with goals in the 54th, 72nd, and 73rd minutes to grow its lead to five, which ended up being the final goal differential, 5-0.
Asheville, now 3-6-3 overall and 1-2-1 in Big South play, will return home on Saturday to host Radford at Greenwood Field in another Big South matchup. Kickoff for that match is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
