Bulldogs' defense locks down Gardner-Webb in 1-0 victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team claimed their first Big South Conference win on Saturday, defeating Gardner-Webb, 1-0, in a defensive showdown between the two teams. Brooklyn Scythes captured the lone goal of the match, and the third goal in her freshman campaign to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.

Coming into the match, Gardner-Webb led the Big South in all offensive categories and were looking to continue their success against Asheville, who had shut out their previous two opponents. 

In the first half, Gardner-Webb pressed the attack against Asheville, putting up 11 shots in the half. Luckily for the Bulldogs, goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler put on a stellar performance, saving all four shots Gardner-Webb put on goal. Asheville's offense was stifled in the first half with Gardner-Webb only allowing two shots from the Bulldogs.

Asheville came into the second half with renewed offensive strength, quickly getting scoring opportunities from forwards Kaiya Boyd and leading scorer Taylor Gardner. Luitweiler continued to play great, racking up two more saves for the defense.

The second half culminated in the 71st minute when Gardner-Webb botched a pass just outside of their own penalty box, to which Brooklyn Scythes promptly fired a shot past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0.
  In the remainder of the match, the Asheville backline defenders Anna Doane and Shae Hassig continued to play excellent and outlasted the Gardner-Webb attack to win the match. The Asheville defense has now allowed only one goal in the past four matches.

The UNC Asheville women's soccer team, now 3-4-3 on the season, will continue Big South play next Wednesday when they travel to Charleston Southern in a contest scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
