Women’s Soccer continues Big South play by hosting Gardner-Webb on Saturday
09.23.2022 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Gardner-Webb at Greenwood Field. The battle of the Bulldogs is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs battled rival Winthrop to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night at Greenwood Field. With the tie, Asheville is now 2-4-3 overall and 0-0-1 in Big South action.
Defense, Defense, Defense – Asheville's defense has been outstanding recently as it has not allowed a goal since September 8 at Davidson. The Bulldogs have totaled over 200 shutout minutes since that Davidson goal. Senior Bronwyn Luitwieler has been the staple at the backend of the Bulldog defense for most of this shutout streak as she has posted clean sheets in back-to-back matches vs. Mount St. Mary's and Winthrop with seven saves. For perspective, the last time the Bulldogs posted back-to-back shutouts was back in 2016 when they blanked Presbyterian and High Point in consecutive contests.
Ties Tidbit – The back-to-back draws for the Bulldogs is something that hasn't happened recently either. The last time Asheville played to a tie in consecutive matches was in 2018 when it tied VMI and Longwood. Furthermore, the three ties so far in 2022 for Asheville marks its most in a season since that same 2018 campaign when it finished with four.
About Gardner-Webb – The Runnin' Bulldogs will come to Asheville on Saturday sporting a 6-3-2 overall record, which includes a 1-0-0 mark in Big South play. Gardner-Webb began conference play with a 5-2 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday. A strength for Gardner-Webb recently has been its ability to score as it has netted at least three goals in four consecutive matches.
Series Rewind vs. the Runnin' Bulldogs – Gardner-Webb has held the historic edge in the all-time series vs. Asheville winning 11 of the 19 all-time meetings, including a 2-0 victory in Boiling Springs last September. However, Asheville did upend the Runnin' Bulldogs, 4-2, in their last trip to Greenwood Field in the spring season of 2021.
Events surrounding the match – Saturday will be alumni day for both of UNC Asheville soccer programs. Additionally, Doc Brown's BBQ food truck will be at both matches. A reminder that admission to Saturday's matches is free.
