Bulldogs draw against Winthrop, 0-0, in conference opener
09.21.2022 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - In their first match in Big South Conference play, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team tied Winthrop, 0-0, after 90 minutes of competitive play.
The Bulldogs and the Eagles were unable to capitalize in the many scoring attempts with a total of 16 shots taken by Asheville and the 15 shots taken by Winthrop. Even with the nearly identical stat lines between the two teams, the Bulldogs made the opposing goalkeeper work slightly harder by putting up four shots on goal.
One of those shots came from Asheville's leading scorer Taylor Gardner, who put a strong attempt in the 53rd minute from beyond the penalty box, only to glance off the Winthrop goalkeeper's finger and deflect off the top crossbar. After not playing the previous match due to injury, Gardner led both teams with five shot attempts throughout the game.
With this being Asheville's second shutout in a row, the backline defenders stepped up again for the Bulldogs. Shae Hassig, Anna Doane, and Jasmine Barry kept the backlines steady by cutting off numerous streaking Winthrop players and stepping up into the midfield in order to get the Asheville offense some opportunities. All three Bulldogs played the entire match along with the seniors Barrett Eidson and Bronwyn Luitwieler.
The Bulldogs will continue their Big South campaign on Saturday when they invite Gardner-Webb to Greenwood Field in the first game of a double header with the men's soccer team. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
