Women’s Soccer opens Big South play Wednesday vs. Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will open Big South play on Wednesday when it hosts Winthrop at Greenwood Field. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Eagles is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville was last in action last Wednesday when it played to a 0-0 draw against Mount St. Mary's. With Wednesday's result, the Bulldogs are now 2-4-2 on the season.
Stepping up Defensively – The Bulldogs' defense has stiffened up as of late. In its last two official matches at Davidson and against Mount St. Mary's, Asheville has allowed just one goal.
Home Sweet Home – Both of Asheville's wins so far in 2022 have been on its home pitch (4-1 over VMI and 6-0 vs. South Carolina State). Furthermore, six of the team's last eight wins over the last two seasons have been at Greenwood Field.
Confidence in Conference – Asheville will look to build upon the confidence it gained playing against Big South foes from a season ago. The Bulldogs won five Big South matches last season, which was their most in a season since 2004.
About Winthrop – The Eagles will begin conference play boasting a 3-2-1 record. Winthrop, which dropped its last match to Wofford last Friday by a score of 2-0, is led by its primary goalkeeper, Izzy Giarrizzi. Giarizzi currently leads all Big South keepers in save percentage (.878) and ranks second in goals against average (.857).
Series Rewind vs. the Eagles – Historically, Asheville has held the edge against the Eagles posting a record of 12-10-1. One of those twelve victories came last October where the Bulldogs won a 4-1 decision on Winthrop's home field.
