ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie Wednesday afternoon against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, at Greenwood Field in their final non-conference match of the season.
Neither the Bulldogs nor the Mountaineers were able to find the back of the net despite the 16 shots taken by Asheville and the 10 taken by Mount St. Mary's.
Senior goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler kept the Asheville defense afloat with her three saves on the day, bringing her save total up to 19 for the season. The defense was also bolstered by Anna Doane, who stepped up to break up multiple potential goal-scoring runs.
Asheville had many scoring chances throughout the match, with 11 different Bulldogs getting shots off against the Mountaineer defense. In the first half, Kaiya Boyd had the best opportunity of the match for the Bulldogs, streaking down the field on a fast break only to have her shot blocked by the goaltender and her rebound attempt miss the far post by a few inches.
The teams remained even for most of the match, but as time wound down, Asheville began to step up their attack in the final minutes. Daysha Chaney nearly scored on a fast break of her own in the final minute of the game but was unable to get it past the goalkeeper for the game winner.
Asheville will begin Big South play next week as Winthrop travels to Greenwood Field for a match scheduled for next Wednesday. Kickoff between the Eagles and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
