ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will hit the road for the first time during the 2022 season this weekend when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in UNC Greensboro's 'Tussle in the Triad' Tournament. Asheville will face Georgia Southern on Friday at 4 p.m. before playing matches against South Carolina State at 4 p.m. on Saturday and host UNC Greensboro later in the day at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out – Asheville picked up its second win of the season on Wednesday when it swept Lees-McRae in three sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-20). With the victory, the Bulldogs are now 2-3 on the 2022 campaign.

Libero leading the way – A definite bright spot early on for Asheville has been the play of its new libero, Giulia Rodrigues. Rodrigues currently leads all Big South players with 82 digs and ranks third in digs per set, 5.12. To put this in perspective, if Rodrigues maintains or improves this pace for the whole season her digs per set average would be the sixth-highest mark in the Division I era for Asheville.

Providing a Spring to the Bulldogs – Another newcomer for the Bulldogs that has seen some success has been freshman Lindsay Springer. Serving as Asheville's primary setter, Springer leads the Big South with 90 assists and ranks fifth in assists per set, 5.62.

About the Opponents – Georgia Southern will come to Greensboro sporting a 2-1 record on the young 2022 season. All three of the Eagles' matches so far have been three sets. GSU swept Alcorn State and USC Upstate but fell in three to Stetson at a tournament it hosted last weekend.

South Carolina State has played one match so far and that was against Charleston Southern on Tuesday. CSU upended the Bulldogs in three sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-10).

Finally, UNC Greensboro is 2-1 as well entering the second week of the season. The Spartans won back-to-back matches against Bethune-Cookman (3-0) and Coppin State (3-2) to open the year but dropped a five-set contest to North Carolina A&T.

Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Asheville and Georgia Southern have met a total of six times over the years with the last match occurring in 2019. The Bulldogs, who are 2-4 vs. Georgia Southern, will look to snap a four-match losing skid against GSU when the two programs match up on Friday. However, Asheville's two wins in the series both came in neutral site matches like what will be contested on Friday.

As for the series against South Carolina State, Asheville boasts a 7-0 record in the all-time series. As the 7-0 record would indicate, Asheville has been dominant against SCSU with just two of the seven matches going beyond three sets.

Saturday night's match between UNCG and Asheville will mark the 17th all-time matchup between the two schools. The Spartans hold the edge winning 10 of the previous 16 contests. Asheville, however, got the better of UNCG in the last match in the series winning a five-set thriller on the Spartans' home floor in 2012.
