09.02.2022 | Women's Volleyball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped its first match of the weekend on Friday to Georgia Southern in three sets (25-14, 25-23, 25-13). With the loss, Asheville's record moves to 2-4 on the season.
Stat Standouts – Offensively, the Bulldogs were paced on Friday by Kat Cruser with seven kills. Cruser, who also had seven digs in the contest, was also the team's most accurate attacker with her hitting percentage finishing up at .261. Defensively, the Bulldogs were once again led by their libero Giulia Rodrigues, who posted 16 digs in the three-set matchup.
First Set – The tide of the first set seemed to shift when Georgia Southern had a 5-3 lead. From there, the Eagles rattled off a 4-0 run to grow their lead to six, 9-3. A 3-0 run by the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit down to three. Unfortunately, that was as close as Asheville would get as the Eagles' offense paced by Robin Rosser (six kills) kept finding points as they went on to win, 25-14.
Second Set – In the second set, both the Eagles and Bulldogs had no issues offensively. Asheville attacked at a match-high .326 in the second, while GSU checked in at .375. The two teams jockeyed for momentum for the entire stanza. The tipping point of the set seemed to occur at 22-22. Back-to-back Eagle kills made the score 24-22. At match point, GSU committed a service error to make it 24-23. Georgia Southern, however, persevered with another kill to finish off the set, 25-23.
Third Set – With the score tied at 1-1 early in the third set, Georgia Southern rattled off a 7-0 run to seize control of the frame. Asheville tried to peck away at the GSU lead but the early hole proved too large to dig out of as the Eagles went on to win the third set and match, 25-13.
Next Up – Asheville will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the 'Tussle in the Triad' Tournament. The Bulldogs will open the day with a match vs. South Carolina State at 4 p.m. followed by a tilt vs. UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
