Men’s Soccer preps for a match vs. ETSU on Friday

09.01.2022 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday when it hosts East Tennessee State at Greenwood Field. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville recorded a 5-3 win over Georgia Southern last Sunday at Greenwood Field. The victory improved the Bulldogs' record to 1-1 on the season.

Hats off to a Bulldog – A highlight in Sunday's win was Sam Pitts-Eckersall netting three goals. It marks the first hat trick for the program in two decades. For his efforts, Pitts-Eckersall was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week and earned Honorable Mention honors on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.

Scoring Stat – Fueled in part by Pitts-Eckersall's hat trick, Asheville scored five goals on Sunday. The five-goal outburst for the Bulldogs marks the most the team has scored in a single match since 2012 when they shut out Brevard, 5-0.

Starting a Streak at Home – Asheville will look to potentially win its second straight match on Friday night against the Buccaneers. If the Bulldogs pull out another win, it'll mark the first back-to-back home victories since they began the spring season of 2021 downing Longwood and Winthrop by identical 2-1 scores.

About ETSU – ETSU has gotten off to a stellar start in 2022 winning its first two matches by a combined score of 7-0 over Longwood (4-0) and Davidson (3-0).  The Buccaneers have been led by Kieran Richards and their goalkeeper Cole Hunter. Richards finished the season's first week with three goals and an assist. Hunter, meanwhile, was in net for back-to-back shutouts and recorded eight saves in the process.

Series Rewind vs. Buccaneers - Asheville and East Tennessee State have matched up just three times in their histories. ETSU has come away with the win in two of the three contests, including a 1-0 victory in Johnson City in 2016. However, the Bulldogs' lone win over the Buccaneers came in Asheville at Greenwood Field back on September 29, 2009, 1-0.
