Bulldog Baseball Summer Update

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Several players on the UNC Asheville baseball team are competing in a variety of leagues this summer to help prepare for the 2023 season and beyond. Coming off one of the team's best seasons in recent years, multiple Bulldogs are having standout seasons for their respective summer league teams.
 
Robbie Burnett - Pittsfield Suns (Futures Collegiate League) – Pittsfield, Mass.
  • Named Second Baseman of the Month in June
  • Named to the All-Star Team and competed in the Home Run Derby
  • In 36 games played, Burnett is hitting .319 with five home runs, 31 runs scored, and drove in 23 more
Brett Johnson - Burlington Sock Puppets (Appalachian League) – Burlington, N.C.
  • Has made 13 pitching appearances for Burlington
  • His ERA is 5.03 on the summer and has totaled nine strikeouts in 19.2 innings
  • Perfect five for five in save opportunities
Kohl Abrams - Winnipesaukee Muskrats (NECBL) – Laconia, N.H.
  • Has hit .240 in 104 at-bats this summer for his summer league team
  • Driven in eight runs, scored 10, and has stolen nine bases
  • Currently riding a four-game hitting streak
Dylan Bacot - Boone Bigfoots (Textile League) – Boone, N.C.
  • Hit .333 in 85 at-bats this summer
  • Has been an extra-base hit machine with five doubles, four triples and two home runs
  • Scored 15 runs and has the same number of walks as strikeouts (14)
Ryan Douglas - Sanford Mainers (NECBL) – Sanford, Maine
  • Has started seven games for the Sanford Mainers and has totaled a team-high 40 innings pitched
  • Struck out 28 batters so far this summer
  • Douglas' ERA checks in at 3.60
Chris Sabo - Kingsport Axmen (Appalachian League) – Kingsport, Tenn.
  • Played a key bullpen role in Kingsport's dominant 30-14 record
  • Is 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched with three saves
  • Racked up 25 strikeouts and is allowing a .145 batting average to opposing hitters
Tylan Reece - Boone Bigfoots (Textile League) – Boone, N.C.
  • Boasts a .394 batting average and a .468 on-base percentage
  • Has driven in 17 runs and has scored 16 more
  • Racked up 26 hits in 66 at-bats with seven of those going for extra bases (six doubles, one triple)
Cole Schiff - Wake Forest Fungo (Premier Collegiate League) – Wake Forest, N.C.
  • Split time starting and relieving this summer
  • Is 2-0 this summer in 15 innings pitched
  • Struck out 14 batters and has an ERA of 3.60
Justin Honeycutt - Burlington Sock Puppets (Appalachian League) – Burlington, N.C.
  • Has posted a 3-1 record with a 3.34 ERA in seven starts this summer for the Sock Puppets
  • Has held opposing hitters to a .243 batting average
  • In 35 innings pitched, Honeycutt has struck out 28 hitters against nine walks
Isaac Gonzales - Kingsport Axmen (Appalachian League) – Kingsport, Tenn.
  • Is 1-0 in nine appearances for the first-place Kingsport Axmen
  • Has a save as well
  • Struck out six batters in nine innings pitched
Michael Groves - Pulaski River Turtles (Appalachian League) – Pulaski, Va.
  • Stellar offensive numbers hitting .397 with four home runs and 14 RBI
  • Scored 12 runs and has an on-base percentage of .457
  • His OPS of 1.108 ranks third on the team with hitters with a minimum of 60 at-bats
Zeus Ponder - Front Royal Cardinals  (Valley League) – Front Royal, Va.
  • Transferred to the Front Royal Cardinals to join fellow Bulldogs Drew Bristow and Bryce Fisher
  • Has posted a 1-3 record this summer in 20.1 innings pitched
  • Struck out 20 hitters and has appeared in seven total games
Bryce Fisher - Front Royal Cardinals (Valley League) – Front Royal, Va.
  • Named Pitcher of the Day Twice & Pitcher of the Week once
  • Named to the League's All-Star Team
  • Is 2-4 with a 2.65 ERA in 40.2 inning pitched this summer with 42 strikeouts
Dawson Salter - Mooresville Spinners (Southern Collegiate League) – Mooresville, N.C.
  • Has pitched three games covering three innings this summer
  • Totaled four strikeouts in his outings
  • Opposing hitters are hitting just .167 off of him
Cole Bates - Edenton Steamers (Premier Collegiate League) – Edenton, N.C. 
  • Has been the Pitcher of the Week
  • Named to the League's All-Star Team Starter
  • Struck out the side in his All-Star game appearance
