HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams posted several standout performances on day one of the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Monday. One outdoor school record was broken, two Bulldogs earned All-Big South recognition to go with several personal-best outings across a variety of events.

The record-breaking performance on Monday came in the men's 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Adam Hessler not only garnered All-Big South Second Team honors by finishing as the runner-up in the event, but he also broke the program's outdoor record clocking in at 30:11.76.

Hessler was not the only Bulldog to earn All-Big South honors on Monday. Senior Claudia Prieto did the same finishing as the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.03-meters. Prieto earned the same honor last year in the long jump with a leap of 6.01-meters.

Fellow senior Clara Wincheski nearly broke a school record herself in the women's 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:30.04. Wincheski's time, which placed her fifth, was just shy of Becky Vonderhaar's time of 35:44.00 set back in 1998.

Most of Monday was filled with qualifying races for a variety of events. Jalen Anderson (200m dash – 21.23), Brock Newsome (1500m run – 4:03.13), Nathaniel Edwards (1500m run – 4:03.14), Madeline Nichols (1500m run – 4:45.21) all earned a spot in the finals in their given events on Wednesday by their performances Monday.

Lastly, the first few events in the heptathlon were held Monday. At the end of day one, a pair of Bulldogs are third and fourth in the standings in Jurnee Coleman and Mallory Haney. Coleman came second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.18) and shot put (10.53m), while Haney paced the field in the 200-meter dash (25.30).

The Bulldogs and the rest of the teams will return to action for day two of the Championships tomorrow afternoon. The start time for the first events is set for Noon.
