HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams continued their stellar week at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday. Asheville saw three student-athletes earn All-Big South honors, one outdoor school record fall, and three performances that qualified them for the final races tomorrow.
In a show of depth for the Bulldogs, the tandem of Jack Choiniere (17.26m) and Solomon McDonald (17.10m) finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put to garner All-Big South accolades. Choiniere's toss of 17.26-meters was a new personal-best for him in the event.
In the heptathlon that began yesterday, Mallory Haney made her way up the standings to finish third with 4,328 points. Haney is the first Bulldog to earn All-Big South honors in the heptathlon since 2004 when Laura Lewandowski earned Third Team honors.
The lone record-breaking outing by a Bulldog on Tuesday was in the women's shot put as Raina Jackson bested the school record that she set earlier this season with a toss of 13.77-meters. Jackson's previous record was 13.44-meters.
Asheville also had multiple student-athletes log outings that ranked them among the best in program history in their given events. John Ciprich (3000m steeplechase – 9:22.65) and Maya Dulaney (100m hurdles – 15.08) posted the third-fastest times in their events, while Kyndell Burrows ran the fourth-fastest time in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 12.30.
Rounding out the stellar performances for Asheville on Tuesday were the trio of Bulldogs that punched their tickets to Wednesday's finals. Bryson Riddick did so in the 400-meter run (48.76), as did the duo of Zac Weas and Jalen Anderson in the 110-meter hurdles (14.58) and 100-meter dash (10.50), respectively.
The third and final day of the Championships will be on Wednesday. The first event is set to get underway at 1 p.m. from High Point.
