CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams saw multiple outdoor school records fall on the final day of the Catamount Classic on Saturday afternoon. Overall, the Bulldogs broke three outdoor program records, earned five first-place medals, garnered 11 podium finishes, and tallied several season and personal-bests across nearly every event contested on the day.Â
"Overall, it was a very good weekend for the Bulldogs," said Head Coach Joel Williams afterward. "Both relay teams were outstanding, setting school records and Jalen Anderson had another outstanding meet breaking his own school 100m record twice Saturday in a prelim. and then again in the final."
Two of Asheville's record-breaking performances came in the two men's relay events on Saturday. First, in the men's 4x100m relay, the foursome of Akin Williams, Anderson, Denley Joseph, and Anthony Mason paced the field with a time of 40.49 to break the school record of 41.16 set last spring.
The other relay record-breaker came in the 4x400m event, where Mason, Anderson, Joseph, and Bryson Riddick also paced the field with a time of 3:13.50. This time tops the previous record of 3:14.63, also set last spring.
The third and final record broken on Saturday occurred in the 100-meter dash. Anderson continued his fantastic outdoor season by breaking his own school record not once but twice with a time of 10.45 in the qualifying round and then again in the finals clocking in at 10.35.
Asheville also won the men's 110m hurdles and discus throw as Zac Weas (14.37), and Jack Choiniere (50.47-meters) paced their respective fields in their events. For Weas, it marked the fastest time for a Bulldog in the 110m hurdles this season.
The trio of Brianna Moore (High Jump – 1.50m), Solomon McDonald (Discus – 46.82m), and Claudia Prieto (Triple Jump – 11.83m) all finished as the runner-up in their given events. Nick Roberts (110m hurdles – 14.87), Grady Rector (High Jump - 1.85m), Daniel Hopkins (3000m steeplechase – 10:11.93) finished on the podium as well.
"Not only were four school records set but also a number of event wins took place, PRs, seasonal bests among all event groups and people at least approaching PR levels," Williams said. "I find it especially gratifying to not only see many achieving at such a high level but to see others on the team being happy for the success of their teammates, pulling for each other. I also see student athletes coaching each other."
Asheville will be back in action next weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The two-day meet is scheduled to run through April 22-23.
