ATLANTA, Ga. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams turned in a stellar performance on the opening day of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday. Collectively, Asheville broke one outdoor school record, won one event, totaled nine top-10 finishes, and logged several more personal and season-best marks.

The top two performances by Asheville came from the women's team on Friday. First, Raina Jackson broke the program's outdoor record in the shot put with a toss of 13.44-meters. Jackson's toss on Friday breaks the record of 12.93-meters held by Crystal Durham set all the way back in 1993.

The other top outing by a Bulldog came in the long jump as Claudia Prieto notched yet another victory in the event. Prieto, whose top leap Friday was 5.98-meters, has now won the long jump in four consecutive meets and the sixth time overall during the 2021-22 academic year.

For the men's team, the Bulldogs had several standout outings both on the track and in the field. Zac Weas (4th – 14.59) and Nick Roberts (8th – 14.75) both finished among the top eight runners in the 110-meter hurdles. In another quick event, Jalen Anderson placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.56.

Asheville also fared well in the distance events on Friday. John Ciprich set a new personal-best time in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.73, while Adam Hessler did the same in the 5000-meter run (14:29.92).

Finally, the Bulldogs had two of the top six finishers in the shot put. Solomon McDonald was under a half meter away from matching his own outdoor school record on his way to a fourth-place finish with a toss of 17.16-meters. Jack Choiniere was not too far behind, placing sixth with a new personal-best throw of 16.94-meters.

Asheville will close out the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday. The first events are scheduled to get underway at Noon from Atlanta.
