03.26.2022 | Men's Tennis

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team hosted the Big South-leading Campbell Camels on Saturday evening, battling until the end before being edged out 4-3.

The match would go down to the wire, with the sides even at 3-3 as all eyes were on the No. 6 singles contest between Rafa Serra and Noe MacQuart, as MacQuart was able to prevail in a three-set battle to keep Campbell perfect in conference play (5-0).

The loss is just the second in conference play for Asheville, dropping the Bulldogs to 8-5 overall (2-2 Big South). Asheville's next match will take place on Wednesday when it visits Presbyterian at 2:00 p.m.

Campbell opened the evening with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, but the Bulldogs proved they were there for a battle once singles flights opened up, with Thursfield claiming the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-3. At the No. 3 flight, Leo Bierbaum, took the first set 7-6 and would lead set number two 6-5, outlasting Leon Petko to win the tiebreak 8-6.

At the No. 1 flight, Jon Brann Reid went back and forth with Damien Nezar, ultimately taking the match via a third-set tiebreak (7-4). Benjamin Maes would give the Camels a 3-2 lead, but Quinn Fender kept the Bulldogs alive, dropping the first set at the No. 4 spot but responding with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. MacQuart and Serra traded points, before MacQuart was able to edge out Serra for the team win.
