Golf to open up Spring Season Monday at RiverTowne Invitational
02.27.2022 | Women's Golf
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After a long break from the fall, the UNC Asheville Women's Golf Team will open up its Spring Season on Monday in the RiverTowne Invitational in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
The tournament, which is hosted by Charleston Southern, will open with 36 holes on Monday and finish with 18 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs and the rest of the field will tee off in shotgun format both days at 8:30 a.m.
Fresh Start
Unlike 2020-21, in which the team only competed in the spring due to COVID, Asheville is much more experienced heading into this spring season, bringing back its entire squad. This edition of the Bulldogs roster features seven sophomores and one senior.
How they Fared this Fall
Asheville showed great promise in its fall competition, competing in five tournaments, including its own French Broad Collegiate Invitational, and even finished T-2 at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational.
After finishing second last summer in the Future Golf Champions Collegiate Series Tournament, Venecia Zaia had two top-15 finishes and tied for third (French Broad) in the fall of 2021. At the Edisto Island Invitational, both the Bulldogs (288) and Zaia (67) carded the lowest individual round(s) in program history, as Zaia would ultimately earn Big South Player of the Week honors.
Career lows were contagious, as Hailey Pendleton (71), Amber Capote (73) and Madyson Gold (70) carded their best individual scores in October, with Gold finishing 9th at the Terrier Intercollegiate. In the Pirate Collegiate Golf Classic, Phoebe Carles recorded her lowest collegiate round (72) en route to a T-10 finish. Teammate Baylee Evans would also record her strongest round in the second 18 of that tournament, firing a 77.
