Men’s Tennis opens up conference season with 5-2 win over Longwood

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team opened its quest to repeat as Big South Conference Champions on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Longwood Lancers 5-2 at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Despite Jon Brann Reid and Leo Bierbaum claiming the No. 1 doubles flight 6-3, the Lancers were able to take the team point with a pair of 7-5 victories at flights No. 2 and No. 3.
Singles competition, however, was the savior for the Bulldogs, as Bruno Serra topped Yoav Weinberg 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 flight. Reid took care of business 6-4, 6-4 at the top flight, with Harry Thursfield downing Jourdan Kast to make the score 3-2 in favor of Asheville. Leo Bierbaum would clinch the match for Asheville with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 2 position, and Quinn Fender added another team point with his three-set victory at the No. 5 flight.
The win moves the Bulldogs' overall record to 6-1 and are 1-0 in the Big South thus far.
Asheville returns to action next Sunday, taking on South Carolina State at 2:00 p.m.
