Bulldogs impress again on the final day of the Marshall Invitational

02.12.2022 | Track and Field

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams continued their impressive indoor season on the final day of the Marshall Invitational on Saturday. Overall, the Bulldogs won nine events on the day and posted at least one podium finish in 15 events.

Headlining the highlights on the day for the Bulldogs were two indoor school records being broken. First, Raina Jackson bested her own school record mark in the shot put with a toss of 13.12-meters besting her previous-best toss of 13.01-meters. It marks the third time this season that Jackson has broken that record.

The other record-breaking performance came in the men's 400-meter dash. Isaac Teasley, who also helped Asheville take first-place in the 4x400-meter relay later in the day (3:18.80), clocked in at 48.32. Teasley's time Saturday slightly edged former Bulldog Tyree McFalling's time of 48.59 set back in 2020.

"
It was a very good way to finish the last meet prior to the conference championships," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We had a lot of event winners, PRs and all-time top five performances and two indoor school records with Raina Jackson in the women's shot put and Isaac Teasley in the men's 400m. I expect we'll have some more seasonal-bests at the Big South Championships."

Jalen Anderson, who was also on the men's 4x400-meter relay team that took first place, picked up a pair of event victories himself. He topped the field in the 60-meter dash (6.93) and the 200-meter dash (21.87). Both of these times were new season-lows for Asheville runners, and his 200-meter time was just .19 seconds away from tying the school's indoor record held by Milan Ristic (21.68 – 2012).

Some of those other personal-bests that Coach Williams referred to nearly matched other school records. Jack Choiniere set a new career-best in the shot put, checking in at 17.18-meters. Choiniere, who has yet to finish outside of the top three in any shot put event this season, ranks behind only teammate Solomon McDonald (18.62-meters) on the school's indoor list.

The other near-records came on the track. Claudia Prieto cut more time in the 60-meter dash finals to set a new career-low time for the event (7.68) that ranks second on the school's all-time indoor list. Prieto also led the way for Asheville in the long jump (5.82-meters) and triple jump (11.75-meters) on the day. Jurnee Coleman achieved the same as Prieto did regarding cutting more time to lower her best time to get closer to the school record. Coleman finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.13. Finally, Adam Hessler tallied the second-fastest indoor time ever by a Bulldog in the 3000-meter run, clocking in at 8:25.18.

Rounding out the event victories for Asheville on Saturday were Grady Rector in the triple jump (11.54-meters), Nick Roberts in the 60-meter hurdles (8.47), and Brock Newsome in the 800-meter run (1:54.78).

Next up for the Bulldogs will be the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 24-25. This year's Championships will occur at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. For more information on the Championships, click
