Bulldog Track & Field off to a good start at Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams got the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships off to a good start on Thursday. After day one, the men's team ranks fourth with 22 points, while the women's squad sits in fifth place with 19 points.
Headlining the day for Asheville was a pair of indoor school records being broken along with three All-Big South honorees. The men's distance medley relay team made up of Brock Newsome, Bryson Riddick, Alex Haines, and Adam Hessler teamed up to place second to earn All-Big South accolades with a time of 10:07.77 that broke an indoor school record for the event.
The other indoor record broken for Asheville on Thursday came in the women's shot put, where Raina Jackson broke her own school record for the fifth time this season with a toss of 13.30-meters.
A pair of seniors in Claudia Prieto and Solomon McDonald also earned All-Big South honors in the long jump and shot put, respectively. Prieto finished second with a leap of 6.03-meters, and McDonald did the same with a toss of 18.14-meters in his event. Prieto also set a new personal-best in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 7.67.
In addition to the record-breaking/all-conference honors, Clara Wincheski neared the top of the school's all-time indoor leaderboard in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:42.80. The trio of John Ciprich (5000m run – 15:01.80), Daphne Bogert (pole vault – 2.91m), and Amanda Orban (800m run – 2:20.45) all set new season-best marks in their events on Thursday.
Asheville also had a pair of runners qualify for Friday's finals. Bryson Riddick (49.43) and Isaac Teasley (49.56) logged a pair of times that ranked in the top eight of the prelims of the 400-meter dash.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for the final day of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
