Men’s Basketball readies for a road test Saturday at Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team will travel to longtime rival Winthrop on Saturday for a Big South contest. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Eagles is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville came away with a 62-58 victory over Radford on Thursday at Kimmel Arena. With Thursday's win, the Bulldogs are now 9-5 overall and 1-0 in Big South action.
Starting Big South Play off with a Win – With Thursday's win over Radford, Asheville has now won its conference opener in three straight seasons. The last time that the Bulldogs have won three consecutive conference-opening games was 2013-2015.
Ending 2022 on a High Note – Asheville will be looking for its tenth win of the season on Saturday. If the Bulldogs knock off the Eagles, it'll mark the first time that the team has won 10 or more games before the new year begins since the 2007-08 season. The 2007-08 Bulldogs also won 10 games before the calendar moved on to 2008 and they capped that season by winning the Big South Regular Season Championship with a 23-10 record overall and a 10-4 mark in Big South play.
Tajion for Three – Earlier this season, Tajion Jones became Asheville's all-time leader in 3-pointers made. Jones, who is up to 303 made threes during his time as a Bulldog, ranks 10th among active Division I men's basketball players in 3-pointers made. In the 2022-23 season, Jones leads all Big South players in 3-point field goal percentage (.477), 3-pointers per game (3.00), and 3-pointers made (42).
About Winthrop – The Eagles dropped their first Big South game of the season on Thursday at USC Upstate, 70-62. Overall, Winthrop holds a record of 5-9 on the 2022-23 campaign. A player to watch for the Eagles on Saturday is Kelton Talford as he currently ranks third in the nation in field goal percentage (72.9 percent).
Series Rewind vs. Eagles – Winthrop holds the edge in the all-time series against the Bulldogs, 46-34. The Eagles have won the last two matchups between these two rivals, including a 84-79 win over the Bulldogs last February at Kimmel Arena. Asheville's last victory over Winthrop was a memorable one as it defeated a previously unbeaten Eagle team by a score of 57-55 back on January 29, 2021.
