Winthrop rallies to upend the Bulldogs, 62-60
12.31.2022 | Men's Basketball
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop used a late rally in the second half to upend the UNC Asheville men's basketball team Saturday afternoon in Big South action by a score of 62-60.
Asheville was led on Saturday by the tandem of Drew Pember and Tajion Jones. Pember filled the stat sheet finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. It was Pember's fifth double-double of the season. Jones, meanwhile, was not far behind with 17 points of his own on a 6-for-13 shooting day from the field.
The Bulldogs jumped on the Eagles early and often to begin Saturday's contest. With a little over 12 minutes to go in the half, Asheville doubled up Winthrop on the scoreboard as it held a 22-11 lead. Pember led this attack with nine of his 19 points coming during that early surge by the Bulldogs. Winthrop, however, would battle back a bit to get back within six on a couple of occasions before halftime. A made layup from Jones in the final seconds of the first half made the score 34-25 Bulldogs at the half.
Much like in the beginning of the game, the Bulldogs began the second half rolling. Asheville quickly grew its lead to as many as 15 points (44-29) with just over 16 minutes to go in regulation. Facing its largest deficit of the contest, Winthrop continued to battle.
The Eagles were able to claw back and took the lead briefly, 58-57, before Pember knocked down a pair of free throws to put Asheville back in front, 60-58, with 1:57 to go. Winthrop's Kasen Harrison hit not just one but two key shots in the final two minutes to put the Eagles in front for good. Asheville did have a pair of shots to try and answer but both attempts missed the mark.
Asheville, now 9-6 overall and 1-1 in Big South play, will be back in action on Wednesday when it visits High Point in another Big South clash. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Panthers is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
