Bulldogs Roll Past Warren Wilson in Wednesday Matinee

11.30.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team rolled past Warren Wilson by a score of 89-40 in Wednesday's (Nov. 30) Education Day matinee.

"It's always great to get a lot of folks in the stands," said head coach Honey Brown. "One of our players asked if we could have this crowd here every day because it was such a great energy out there."

"My heart was smiling seeing the crowd out here today," said McKinley Brooks-Sumpter. "They were holding up signs, and it's great to have kids looking up to us."

The Bulldogs scored 31 points in the first quarter, while holding the Owls to single digits until the final minute of the frame before ultimately taking a 31-10 lead to the second.

The Bulldogs scored 18 points in the second quarter to Warren Wilson's 15 to take a 49-25 lead to the break.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the second half, with 21 points on the third quarter and 19 in the fourth quarter.

Jordaynia Ivie led all scorers with 13 points and was one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures in the game. Jada Brigman tallied a career-high 11 points in the game, while Jamia Blake and Abigail Wilson each had 10. Nycerra Minnis tallied nine points in the game, while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter tallied eight and Mallory Bruce and Dakota McCaughan each had seven. Millie Brown tallied a career-high six points, while Jamya Blanks also added six points along with two from Faith Adams.

"I thought we did a good job of moving the ball," said Brown. "I wanted us to work the ball around and not just force something up quick."

"It was a great opportunity for us to get out there and compete," said Brooks-Sumpter. "Coach says good things happen when we share the ball and help each other."

The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Owls 56-26 in the game, led by seven each from Minnis and Brooks-Sumpter. Ivie and Blake each grabbed six boards in the game, while Blanks also had five. McCaughan pulled down four rebounds in the game, while Brigman had three and four others each registered two. McCaughan registered a game-high five assists, while three others each registered three and another three each had one. Three Bulldogs each registered three steals apiece, while another trio each had one in the game. Three different Bulldogs also each posted one block in the game.

"We want to keep the momentum and energy up into next week," said Brown. "We want to continue to work on our chemistry and continue to compete in practice."

The Bulldogs (4-2) return to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday (Dec. 7) to face Furman in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena.
