Bulldogs play tough but fall at Presbyterian

10.07.2022 | Women's Volleyball

CLINTON, S.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team lost its match against Presbyterian on Friday (25-13, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21) after fighting back in the third set to extend the match.

Stat Standouts - It was a high-scoring, efficient night for the Bulldogs with three players tallying a .400 hitting percentage or higher. Lexy Cole led the way hitting a whopping .538, with Nina Finderle following close behind hitting .412 and six blocks to lead the team in points. Lindsay Springer totaled a double-double for the match, setting up 21 assists and grabbing 14 digs. Pelin Aksoy also had an impressive night, leading the team in kills with 10 and posting a 10-point game.

First Set - The Bulldogs and the Blue Hose started out evenly in the first frame, with Kat Cruser leading the charge by putting up two kills early. The two teams tied at 6-6 before Presbyterian began to pull away with the lead, ringing off an eight point run to put them up 21-10. From there PC finished off the set, 25-13.

Second Set - Asheville jumped out to an early lead in the first frame, putting up a five point run to take the lead, 11-5. The Blue Hose quickly answered back, putting together a five point run of their own, eventually tying the match at 15 apiece. Presbyterian went on another run to go up 21-16, but Finderle put an end to the momentum by getting a huge block and ringing off three kills in quick succession to get to a 22-21 score. But she was unable to turn the tide as Presbyterian closed the set out, 26-24.

Third Set - The Bulldogs traded points with Presbyterian in the first frame before taking the lead and dominating the rest of the set. Cole was all over the court in this set, putting down four kills and denying multiple Blue Hose attacks at the net. After the lead was tied 9-9, the Bulldogs took control and didn't give up the lead, winning the set 25-17.

Fourth Set - With momentum on their side, The Bulldogs looked to make the reverse sweep and started off strong. They took the lead early with kills from Cole and Makenzi Searcy but were unable to pull away like in the previous set. The teams traded the lead until a tie, 10-10, where the Blue Hose made a six point run putting the Bulldogs at a disadvantage. The Bulldogs fought back, getting back to a two point deficit, 23-21, off of a kill from Ryann Allison and a service ace from Springer. Unfortunately, the comeback effort wasn't enough and the Blue Hose took the game, 25-21.

Next Up - The Bulldogs, now 3-12 and 0-5 in Big South matches, will play again tomorrow in Charleston, S.C. when they take on Charleston Southern in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
