Bulldogs start strong but fall to Radford

10.21.2022 | Women's Volleyball

RADFORD, Va. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team started off strong in Friday's match against Radford. Unfortunately, the Highlanders rallied and won the match in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20). Despite the loss, Asheville had great performances from freshmen Avery Loeback and Bahar Kurtulus who combined for 22 kills in the contest.

Stat Standouts - Loeback and Kurtulus each had career nights to lead the way for Asheville. Loeback led the Bulldogs with a team-high 12 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Kurtulus added ten kills of her own and two blocks to help the Bulldogs defensively. Asheville's veterans also had their moments with Kat Cruser totaling 10 kills and Lexy Cole hitting .267 to go with five block assists.

First Set - The match started out neck-and-neck between the two teams. Asheville led for most of the set but only by two points at most. The lead changed eight times within the first frame. Kurtulus and Cruser generated four kills each in this set and kept Asheville in the lead as the stanza progressed. The Bulldogs were able to pull away with the score tied at 18-18, with Kurtulus, Cruser and Cole icing out Radford with clutch blocks and kills to win the set, 25-20.

Second Set - The second set had even more razor thin margins than the first, with the lead changing six times and tying 16 times within the set. In the early going, it was all Loeback for the Bulldogs, who collected a block early on and rattled off four kills in the set. Kurtulus kept her hot-hitting going, also tallying four kills to keep the score close going into the final frame. The score was tied at 18 before Radford closed out the set, 25-22.

Third Set - Radford took an early lead in the third set and never gave it back to Asheville, who had fought hard to keep the score tight in the previous sets. Loeback continued to produce for the Bulldogs leading the team in this set with three kills, while Giulia Rodrigues led the team defensively, making diving saves and digging out six hits from the powerful Radford hitters. The Bulldogs fell in this set, 25-17.

Fourth Set - Down to their final set, the Bulldogs looked to make a comeback, and nearly did in the final frame. With the score 16-11 in favor of Radford, the Bulldogs put together a six-point run to tie and take the lead from Radford. Led by two kills from Loeback, a service ace from Lindsay Springer, and a few errors from Radford, the Bulldogs took a 17-16 lead. Unfortunately, Radford had their own five-point run and finished off the set, 25-20.

Next Up - Asheville, now 3-16 and 0-9 in the Big South, will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to play Winthrop on Saturday. First serve for that tilt is set for 2 p.m.
