Strong Second Half leads High Point past Asheville on Friday
10.21.2022 | Men's Soccer
HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point scored four second half goals on its way to defeating the UNC Asheville men's soccer team by a score of 5-0 Friday night in Big South action.
Asheville's defense was tested early and often against the Panthers. Early in Friday's contest, the Bulldog defense stood tall and made some stellar stops to keep the match scoreless.
High Point broke through with the match's first goal in the 13th minute. A ricocheted shot trickled just outside the box and HPU's Noah Holmes attempted a shot. Asheville's goalkeeper A.J. Bengds got a piece of it but Holmes' shot did find the back of the net as High Point took a 1-0 lead.
Following the Panther goal, Asheville's defense regrouped and kept the home team off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half. The Bulldogs had a pair of corner kicks towards the tail end of the first half but neither try turned into a goal as the two teams broke for halftime with the Panthers leading 1-0.
When the two teams returned for the second half, High Point kept the pressure on the Bulldog defense. The Panthers outshot Asheville 11-1 in the second half and attempted five corner kicks as well. HPU took advantage of those opportunities as it scored four more times to finish off a 5-0 win over the Bulldogs.
Asheville, now 1-10-4 overall and 0-3-3 in Big South play, will return to the pitch on October 29 when it pays a visit to Radford in another Big South conference clash. Kickoff for that match is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
