Bulldogs score late but fall at USC Upstate
10.12.2022 | Women's Soccer
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite a late goal from Kaiya Boyd, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team fell to USC Upstate, 2-1, after two second half goals from the Spartans.
The Bulldogs created a number of opportunities in the beginning of the game. Asheville put up three shots on goal in the early minutes, led by Azalea Mihailovich who put up two shots against the Spartan defense, including an attempt from beyond the penalty box that went wide left. The Bulldogs controlled the ball efficiently, possessing the ball 54 percent of the time in the first half.
Despite the chances for the Bulldog offense, they were unable to find the net in the first half. As the time ticked down in the half, USC Upstate put up their own attack on the Asheville defense, with goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler saving the lone shot on goal by the Spartans.
At the start of the second half, the Spartans immediately began pressuring the Bulldog back line. Pressing for an errant pass or scoring opportunity, USC Upstate found one and broke the scoring drought with a 56th minute goal from Ashley Finn.
Boyd put up a few fast breaks in response to the Spartan goal but her shots were unable to find the back of the net. Daysha Chaney also had a fast break into Spartan territory but her attempt was stopped by the defense.
USC Upstate scored again in the 73rd minute after a scramble inside the penalty box brought the ball to Sydney Thomas, who put the Spartans up 2-0.Â
After a free kick cross from Taylor Gardner, Boyd finally hit her target in the 85th minute, putting a shot in the net to bring the Bulldogs within one.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 3-8-3 and 1-4-1 in Big South play. Asheville will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on Longwood in a conference match scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
